Get Smurf'd!
Sapa tak pernah tengok kartun The Smurfs - a group of small blue fictional creatures kekecik dulu? Rugiiii.. coz it's really fun and funny especially the part where they're named after their dominant trait and that they use the word 'smurf' for everything! I recently watched the cartoon-turned-movie at the cinema and it was not as awesome as I thought it would be but it was OK, I guess. Just flawed.
It started off very Enchanted-ish (the movie Enchanted), where some of the smurfs were magically sent to the present day New York through a vortex when they were chased by the evil Gargamel and his equally evil-but-more-sensible ginger cat, Azrael, who destroyed their village back in their world. In NYC, they met an expecting couple named Patrick and Grace who let them stay in their apartment while they're trying to find a way to get back to their village.
As much as I could not stop laughing watching it, the story could have been better. First, it is a cartoon. And generally, cartoons are for kids, and guess what? The story is set in a grown-up world and there's no child character to introduce the magical creatures and to join the action! Still, I'm sure kids will love it anyway. Second, this story reminds me of The Sorcerer's Apprentice where there are countless encounters between the protagonists and antagonists but too much is too much - people like me want to see real action and adventure, not similar, meaningless encounters that make the story predictable and dull. Third, there's too many smurf word substitutions, which of course hilarious for most adults but not suitable for kids who tend to pick up all of these words easily, unless you don't mind your kids smurfing away, of course!
All in all, it's entertaining enough but I think that is all to it. For more info, click here.
