Disbelief

My heart flutters wildly. I'm back in Puchong yet I still can't believe that I'm back for good. Tee-heeee. Seriously. In my mind, it's the holidays and I'm only gonna be here temporarily.

But not this time.. This is for real. I'm not going back to Sandakan when the new term starts. I'm not gonna be there when my Form 3 kids take their PMR results and next embark on a new journey in Form 4, or even when the Form Fivers are taking their SPM results. Also, I'm soo gonna miss hanging out with my best girl friends. Miss my students. Miss my wonderful colleagues. It's all happening so fast. And there are a lot of adjustments to be made too. At home, at school/work. New friends, new students, new environment. Everything is as if I'm back to square one.

Now that I'm back, the real work begins.

Is that a good thing, or a bad thing?

Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone?

Awwww.. it is hard to say goodbye. You put so much time and love into the place and people around you and then one day you just have to pack your bags and leave. How do we say goodbye to what we had? To what meant so much to us? To the good times that made us laugh out loud and the bad times that made us cry in vain?

Sometimes people may not remember exactly what you did or said, but they will always remember how you made them feel... Yes, it is always about the people. Many people will walk in and out of our lives, but only true friends leave footprints in our hearts and minds.

So, I'd like to take this opportunity to tell those people (you know who you are!), thanks for the good times, wonderful memories and beautiful friendships. We had joy, we had fun, but now it's time to say goodbye. And when we do, let's just say things will never ever be the same again! T.T

Loving It

Thank you, 5E students..
I super like this!! ;)

God, I love my job!

Being a teacher is a calling. We don't go for it for the excitement, glamour or money (still underpaid! :p), but for the thrill of inspiring and imparting knowledge and wisdom to young minds. It's so satisfying knowing we've made a difference in people's lives, regardless of how little it is. The evidence of our success is not in monetary profits, but in the academic and personal success of our students. If they're successful, we are too! It made all the hard work worthwhile, really.

Plus, working with young people makes me feel young too! ^^

Other 50 reasons to love your job as a teacher (got it from here):
  1. Sharing my experiences
  2. Helping inexperienced teachers solve problems
  3. The ability to help children achieve their best
  4. Inspiring them not only academically but personally
  5. Getting up on my stage and performing for them, too
  6. The thrill of a good and well thought out lesson is incomparable
  7. The kids' energies; their inquisitiveness makes me want to go and teach them, and push them harder
  8. I love the instant feedback I get from my students about my own performance, even when they don't realize they're doing it
  9. Being able to interact with kids who are mostly good and do try to do what's expected of them
  10. Sharing my enthusiasm for my subject matter - you should hear me talk to them about why I love Mesopotamia, even more than the ever popular Egypt!
  11. I also enjoy seeing their growth over the nine months I have them; they come into middle school as scared elementary students and leave at the end of the year, as (mostly) prepared 7th grader
  12. I love learning and I love the interaction between professor and students
  13. My coworkers are great
  14. I enjoy all of the funny stories that my job provides, my job is never ever boring
  15. When I am finally able to actually teach, I feel very rewarded when that little light bulb goes off
  16. Teaching grad school, my students are amazingly dedicated teachers, I have the opportunity to travel across the United States helping teachers and schools work at the grassroots level to improve students lives
  17. Working with the students; each week, I am invited to do demonstration lessons in K-12 classrooms — I love the range, I love the challenge, and I really love the kids
  18. I feel smarter every day that I come home from my job; it almost makes me feel guilty that I get paid for this!
  19. Facilitating games
  20. Being able to explore diverse issues and situations
  21. The challenge of teaching a second language in the 21st century
  22. I love getting to know the kids and I especially love having siblings come up and watching the family grow; it is a real privilege to be part of people's lives like that
  23. The rare occasion they come back for a visit, it is a joyful reunion
  24. The freedom of the job; I used to be in a cube job where I had to punch a timeclock all the time
  25. I have control over my job — I decide what and when I teach, I decide if I am going to stay late, I can take my work home if needed (Though I don't do that as often as I used to)
  26. My bosses listen
  27. I like working with teenagers, plus, I learn self assertiveness from teenagers.
  28. I get to work with books, which I love
  29. I honestly and truly believe that teaching is what I was born to do; maybe God really does plan our lives and if we follow that plan we will be very happy with our lives
  30. I seem to be good at it
  31. I get to explore stories and try new ideas and encourage others to do the same
  32. I love messing with their heads
  33. I love how wee the freshmen are and watching them grow into young ladies and gentlemen (in theory)
  34. I love the power of controlling lives – well, at least for an hour or so a day!
  35. I love listening to their ideas and seeing the way their minds work
  36. I love the push to keep learning, to keep discovering new questions and to help students discover their own questions
  37. I love kids and I love math; how many jobs can combine them? I guess the guy at the carnival who counts the kids getting on the rides, but he has to clean puke, so that's out of the question
  38. Honestly, I can, in the space of 55 minutes, (on a good day) get booed for telling a bad joke, discuss planetary motion or the etymology of "radish", clearly explain how a new-for-them algebra technique flows from their previous knowledge, give a challenging extension problem and get some enthusiasm going for it (for math!), help kids who just don't get it to actually get it, and still find time for a quick game; I feel like a game show host who doesn't have to fake it
  39. I enjoy sharing my love of learning and my passion for certain topics
  40. It goes beyond just teaching the material.. it's about making a personal connection with the students
  41. I love sharing the excitement of a good book — when I introduce it and start talking about it with excitement, the students can't wait for me to start reading; when it's time to stop reading and begin our next lesson, they beg me to read "just a little more"
  42. I also like seeing many of the cross-curricular connections students make
  43. Watching the students grow year after year
  44. Recruiting kids into my program
  45. Being creative with the music
  46. Transforming students from knowing nothing about how to play an instrument to being able to perform complicated (for them) music by the end of the year
  47. Demonstrating the value of long-range planning to achieve crazy cool results
  48. Guiding students to success, both individually and through group work, and marketing those successes
  49. It's something like a mix of game show host, stand up comedian, dad, vaudeville juggler, and sports play-by-play commentator
  50. It has helped me to overcome my fear of public speaking; I've had students tell me that I should be an actor, preacher, and English teacher (I correct grammar frequently)

Phewww, that was long. The bottom line is, do what you love and love what you do, as only then you'll find satisfaction in whatever you're doing! Are you doing what you love and loving what you do?

Of Leaving

So many things to do, so little time!!

First, this is the final week of school for this year. There are Graduation Day and Speech Day, report card day yadda, yadda, yadda. Well, you know how it goes. I'm glad we got both G-Day and S-Day done and over with.. phewww! Also, there are SKT, SGM and whatever crap to be handed in, also this week! And since I'm going back to Semenanjung for good, I have to clean and clear my work table and locker by then and also need to serah tugas blah blah blah.. and the list goes on!

Second, I have to do a lot of packing.. also within this week since I'm flying back next week. So far, I managed to clear my wardrobe, which is amazing coz I have heaps and heapsss of clothes! Ha-ha. Still, there are other things I din manage to pack yet, for instance books and other itsy-bitsy things I'm still using, since Monday is like another week or so. Just for the record, packing is soooooo not my cup of tea! T.T

Last but not least, it's about the shipping of my car to Semenanjung. Yes, I intend to bring it home though I got a few people interested in buying it. The car, though now 'embellished' with scratches and whatnot, holds a lot of memories and I don't think I'm ready to let it go yet. Still surveying the best price for shipping, though. I hope I can get it all done before I go back.

On a lighter note, esok raya.. so, Selamat Hari Raya Aidiladha to all! I don't think I'll celebrate it this year though.. what with the packing and endless work and exhaustion. Nevertheless, I do look forward to go to open houses and enjoy my final days with my colleagues and friends here! I'm sure I'll miss them more than I think I would!

Like I said before, so many things to do, so little time!!!

Sitting, Waiting, Wishing

Just in case you can't see it clearly, it's "Permohonan anda sedang diproses"... Wargghh... Yes, I know that the result will only come out from 15 November onwards but I can't help but feeling curious and anxious about the whole thing! It's really hard to concentrate on everything else when I don't know if my application is gonna be approved or not! But it's not like there's anything I can do about it except sit and wait.. and I know it's hard to do that when you want something so bad! Just a few more days to go.. gonna cross my fingers, pray and hope it's gonna be a 'yes'. Aminnn...

Oh my, the waiting is killing me!

Body Massage

I had a full body massage at the hotel's wellness centre before bedtime last night and it was amazing! I never realized it could be so relaxing and rejuvenating. Apart from yesterday's long drive, I do experience frequent backaches and headaches recently.  I always feel tired and my muscles are full of spasms and knots. Seriously. I really need that massage. The masseuse really knows how to use her hands! The feeling is like being restored and renewed. I slept better last night and woke up early this morning, feeling all refreshed and ready to go! Try it. It may be a lil bit expensive (not every time), but it's worth it.

p/s: A spa treatment makes a great gift for women! :D *hint*

Bring Out the Hero in You

I'm sure all of us look in the mirror on a regular basis.. the question is, who do you see when you look in the mirror? Who are you looking at? Who is looking back at you? And who are you looking for? Whether we realise it or not, we seek ourselves every time. But do we find what we're looking for? Well, some people do, while some are still searching.

As for me, I believe the only way we can find ourselves is through self reflection. Through it, I'm able to think of what worked, what didn't, what I'd learned and what I'd do differently next time. It also serves as a guide, giving me insights about myself and the world around me.

"What are your strengths and weaknesses" is probably the most hated question ever. While most people would have no difficulty in stating the former, it's a totally different case for the latter. In fact, I think most people will squirm at the attempt of answering it, for no one really wants to own up on their weak points although it's true. Well, the truth is always ugly, that's why we cannot accept it easily, especially when it is pointed out by the people around us.

In fact, we often view criticism as an attack on our worth as a person. People are way too quick to assume the worst and never ask questions or try to understand why someone is criticizing a certain way or say a certain thing. We should be more open to criticism, no matter how hard it is. The more open we are to it, the more we can use it to enhance our performance in areas we need improvement, well, unless you don't want to improve yourself for the better! Being open here means we're able to accept negative feedback about ourselves our our work without reacting overly emotionally. You don't have to defend yourself against criticism all the time. Treat it as a learning opportunity. Just listen to it and then decide what you wanna do with it. In simpler words, take or leave it. The choice is yours. But of course, being human, when someone tells you what you don't wanna hear, you will hurt, even if only a little. Betul tak? Like I said previously, the truth is always ugly.
"There is nothing either good or badbut thinking makes it so" (Shakespeare)
I strongly believe that our self perception determines our attitude and behaviour. I mean, if we think we are not good, then we will not be good; we also act that way. If think we are great, then we will be great. Happiness lies within ourselves, not something outside. Thus, those who never really reflected on their strengths and weaknesses never seem to get better. Why? It's because they don't learn from their past experiences. No one is perfect but it's enough for me knowing I am who I am today because of my strengths and weaknesses. I still need to keep on learning, though, for the lesson of life is in life itself.

Just as Confucius once said, "By three methods we may learn wisdom: first, by reflection, which is the noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest."

Which one would you choose?

DeepavaLidays XD

I eagerly look forward to this Deepavali holidays.. And why is that?

Well, for starters, it's gonna be a longggg weekend as we got two days off work/school starting on Thursday. Me likey.. nak nak bila hujung tahun ni kerja tak banyak! Secondly, I'm gonna spend my hols in KK.. yay! This leads us to the third reason which is... I'm not gonna be alone there as my parents and baby brother are gonna be there too! Yesssss, they're flying all the way from Semenanjung to come see me and the place where I teach for the first time ever! Since this is their first visit to Sabah,  I'm gonna show em round some interesting places in this land below the wind like the capital city itself, Kundasang - home of the luminous Mt Kinabalu, Sandakan, the beach or one of the islands (weather permitting) and many more!

Uuuu.. I can hardly wait! How's that for good news? :D

p/s: Wishing all Indians Happy Deepavali in advance and enjoy it with your loved ones!

Nooo, Not Again!

It has been a while since my Baby V (read: car) was last involved in any accident of all sorts (refer here, here, here and here! Itu yang on record, off the record pun ada hehe). Seems like I'm a bad driver huh? Well, what to do.. sometimes its my own doing, while most of the times, it's other people's.. not like I can help it! But last week, something unexpected happened. Yelah, lama tak kena accident ni semua kan.. :p

I was on my way to work when I saw some workers were cleaning the drains along the road. As I drove past the accumulation of dirt, gunge and whatnot, all of a sudden 'Zrapppppp!!'.. Macam nak gugur jantung! I knew something bad must have happened to my baby but what to do.. I went to work anyway.. after all I don't wanna be late. Once I reached school, baru la ternampak these scratches.. I thought as much when I heard the loud bang earlier.. Uwaaa!!

Rear passenger's door :(
Front passenger's door :(

On my way back home, I stopped by the drain to check what had caused the scratches, and guess what?? There was this one red brick 'standing proudly' by the roadside (tak sempat nak snap gambar). Of all things! It's no wonder that the scratches were pretty severe and deep! I mean, how is it possible for us to see such thing when we're driving? I don't know who came up with the idea of dumping the piles of gunks there! Like, seriously! Geramnya, feel like cursing seribu kali!

p/s: Paling-paling tu nak kena cat the entire door. Hmmphh!
