Arabic Food, Anyone?

Hari tu before gerak balik kampung, kitorang singgah jalan-jalan cari makan kat Cyberjaya (niat asal nak cari Tutti Frutti sebenarnya hahahahahah) sekali pusing punya pusing sekali terberhenti dekat satu restoran Arab nama Sana'a Restaurant.

Cuma please excuse the surroundings sebab it's undergoing renovation for the time being so the interior memang buruk gile - in fact tv pun ala-ala nak rosak (ini tak tipu ye). Kalau korang enjoy cheap shisha and loud Yemeni music, this is definitely the place for you.

Anyways, biasanya kalau pegi Saba' or Hadramawt, kitorang akan order either lamb kabsah, mandi chicken or lamb madghout and chicken shwarma, tapi di Sana'a kitorang decide nak try menu baru iaitu makluba chicken. Biasanya nasi arab ni is served with sambal salsa tapi di Sana'a sup pun ada - tapi bukan sup ayamlah, lamb soup tak silap. Rasa not bad and the ayam is super empuk. Yang lain dari yang lain is the potato yang dimasak sekali dengan nasi (as you can see in the pics below).

Makluba chicken

Besides that, we also ordered chicken shwarma which is super sedap! Sedap dari mana-mana kedai Arab yang biasa makan.. seriously, and it only costs RM5 each! Berbaloi-baloi.

Chicken shwarma

Haruslah pegi lagi nanti! Ingat nak try menu lain - tapi chicken shwarma tu wajiblah heheheh

p/s: Berminat nak pegi? Sila Google or guna GPS ye :-)

Plainly Rude

Aku paling hangin kalau orang drive tak reti nak bagi signal ni. Hari tu aku hon sorang mamat yang tukar lane  tiba-tiba dan tak bagi signal menyebabkan aku (and maybe a few more cars behind me) had to brake suddenly. Dah la driving recklessly - cilok sana-sini. And then you know what? Dia keluarkan tangan bagi middle finger.. how rude!!

Hello guy, why is it so hard for you to admit your own mistake? And why do you wanna put the blame on others when it was you who put our lives at risk? For me, kalau takde kereta belakang ko, aku tak peduli pun ko nak tukar lane sesuka hati dan tak bagi signal. As long as ko tak membahayakan orang lain, takpe. Ini tak. Lepas tu nak tunjuk taiko pulak bagi middle finger. So what? Tolonglah jangan jadi selfish.. orang lain pun bayar road tax okey! Pfffttt.

That Someone Special's Birthday

Memandangkan waktu birthday dia tu weekend, maka kami duduk melepak-lepak aje kat rumah tengok wayang. Eh. Tengok movies. Plural hokeh. Most people biasanya akan keluar waktu weekend dengan family kan? Not for us though. Those who know us well akan tau yang we simply hate going out on the weekends sebab tak suka jam, sesak dan ramai orang heheheh (hate may be a bit too strong.. disfavour?)

Anywaysss, sebab birthday boboy sorang tu (boy ke? hakhakhak), saya dengan baik hatinya telah memasak dish kegemaran beliau iaitu nasi ayam and sup ayam. Licin habis. Tak sesia masak ye?

Malamnya we had a lil celebration - just a simple one. I made chocolate lava cake using the ramekins I just bought from Daiso (for five freaking bucks each!) sebagai memecah duli, eh, meresmikan ramekins tersebut. Masak dalam ramekins je sebab dua orang je nak makan pun. Karang masak banyak-banyak takde sapa nak habiskan. Membazir je. Nak recipe kalu sila la menjengah Aida Ikmal's Kitchen yang lama tak ber-update tu ye.

Before masuk oven

The final result.. yum yum yum!

Anyways, tahun ni takde acara surprise surprise or buka-buka hadiah sebab hadiah dah dibagi awal haha boleh? My hubby ni peminat tegar Crocs dan dah lama dia dok complain the current one dia pakai tu tapaknya dah haus so saya sekali lagi dengan baik hatinya telah membelikan beliau a new pair. Saya memang suka bagi hadiah yang praktikal. Kemain suka lagi terus pakai hohohoh.. Oleh sebab dah rasmi before birthday takde lak gambarnya tapi kasutnya lebih kurang cenggini la..

credit to Crocs

Happy birthday, sayang! Thank you for being such a wonderful husband. I love you many many.

p/s: Actually aku pun dah dapat hadiah birthday in advance.. apa dia? Tungguuuu.. *sape yang dah tau sila hush hush okeyy heheheh*

25 Little Tips for Big Weight Loss

I managed to lose about 5kgs throughout the fasting month yet gained another 1.5kgs or so throughout Syawal (the raya month) and am trying hard to lose those extra kilos (and maybe more!) now. I found these useful tips on WeightWatcher's site which, hopefully, can get me (and you) back on track. So what's the best way to get started?

1. Good things come in small packages
Here's a trick for staying satisfied without consuming large portions: Chop high-calorie foods like cheese and chocolate into smaller pieces. It will seem like you're getting more than you actually are. (say no to snacking unless it's fruits or yoghurts!! seems to work for me.. anyways, I try to eat smaller portion of rice now sebab tak makan langsung is a big no-no)

2. Get "water-wise"
Make a habit of reaching for a glass of water instead of a high-fat snack. It will help your overall health as well as your waistline. So drink up! Add some zest to your six to eight glasses a day with a twist of lemon or lime. (people say water diet is the fastest and easiest way to lose weight.. plus it makes us feel full too.. apa tunggu lagi?)

3. Herb it up
Stock up your spice rack, and start growing a small herb garden in your kitchen window. Spices and herbs add fantastic flavor to foods without adding fat or calories. (I love using all sorts of spices in my cooking!)

4. Slim down your soup
Make a big batch of soup and refrigerate it before you eat it. As it cools, the fat will rise to the top and can be skimmed off the surface. (mine and hubby's favourite!)

5. Doggie-bag that dinner
At restaurants that you know serve large portions, ask the waiter to put half of your main course in a take-home box before bringing it to your table. Putting the food away before you start your meal will help you practice portion control. (I tend to eat less now so I rarely order big meal portion when eating out)

6. Listen to your cravings
If you're craving something sweet, eat something sweet — just opt for a healthier nosh (like fruit) instead of a high-calorie one like ice cream. The same goes for crunchy cravings — for example, try air-popped popcorn instead of high-fat chips. It's just smart substitution! (nothing or nobody can stop you whenever you have those cravings.. but remember.. be moderate!)

7. Ease your way into produce
If you're new to eating lots of fruits and vegetables, start slowly. Just add them to the foods you already enjoy. Pile salad veggies into your sandwiches, or add fruit to your cereal. (I now substitute our veggie meal with fresh salad and veggies)

8. Look for high-fat hints
Want an easy way to identify high-calorie meals? Keep an eye out for these words: au gratin, parmigiana, tempura, alfredo, creamy and carbonara, and enjoy them in moderation. (sekali-sekala takpe kan?)

9. Don't multi-task while you eat
If you're working, reading or watching TV while you eat, you won't be paying attention to what's going into your mouth — and you won't be enjoying every bite. Today, every time you have a meal, sit down. Chew slowly and pay attention to flavors and textures. You'll enjoy your food more and eat less. (okay! will try to break the habits of reading or playing my phone while eating!)

10. Taste something new
Broaden your food repertoire — you may find you like more healthy foods than you knew. Try a new fruit or vegetable (ever had plantain, bak choy, starfruit or papaya?). (will definitely try this)

11. Leave something on your plate at every meal
One bite of bagel, half your sandwich, the bun from your burger. See if you still feel satisfied eating just a bit less. (membazir! tak elok! will try my best to put less food on my plate and use smaller plate instead)

12. Get to know your portion sizes
It's easy to underestimate how much you're eating. Today, don't just estimate things — make sure. Ask how much is in a serving, read the fine print on labels, measure your food. And learn portion equivalents: One serving of pasta, for instance, should be around the size of a tennis ball. (still reducing the portion of food I take daily, especially after the fasting month)

13. Don't give up dips
If you love creamy dips and sauces, don't cut them out of your food plan completely. Just use low-fat soft cheese and mayo instead of the full fat stuff. (hardly eat them but will keep this in mind)

14. Make a healthy substitution
Learn to swap healthier foods for their less-healthy counterparts. Today, find a substitution that works for you: Use skim or low-fat milk instead of whole milk; try whole-wheat bread instead of white. (still trying..)

15. Bring lunch to work tomorrow
Packing lunch will help you control your portion sizes. It also provides a good alternative to restaurants and takeaways, where making healthy choices every day can be challenging (not to mention expensive). (I try to cook extra food at night so I get to bring some to work on the following morning)

16. Have some dessert
You don't have to deny yourself all the time. Have a treat that brings you pleasure, but this time enjoy it guilt-free be — sure you're practising portion control, and compensate for your indulgence by exercising a little more or by skipping your afternoon snack. (my kind of dessert nowadays includes froyo and green apples)

17. Ask for what you need
Tell your mother-in-law you don't want seconds. Ask your other half to stop bringing you chocolates. Speak up for the place with great salads when your co-workers are picking a restaurant for lunch. Whatever you need to do to succeed at weight loss, ask for it — make yourself a priority and assert yourself. (yup, yup.. sometimes we have to be a bit selfish when it comes to taking care of ourselves)

18. Improve your treadmill technique
When walking on a treadmill, don't grip the rails. It's fine to touch them for balance, but you shouldn't have to hold on. If you do, that might be a signal you should lower the intensity level. (I hate running on the treadmill.. but I don't mind running on the cross trainer)

19. Simon says... get fit
Here's an easy way to fit in exercise with your kids: Buy a set of 1 lb weights and play a round of Simon Says — you do it with the weights, they do it without. They'll love it! (no kids yet so one day, maybe)

20. Make the most of your walks
If your walking routine has become too easy, increase your effort by finding hills. Just be sure to tackle them at the beginning of your walk, when you have energy to spare. (will try to do this)

21. Shop 'til you drop...pounds!
Add a workout to your shopping sessions by walking around the mall before your start spending. And try walking up the escalator — getting to your destination faster will be an added bonus. (who can ever say no to shopping??)

22. Walk an extra 100 steps at work
Adding even a little extra exercise to your daily routine can boost your weight loss. Today, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or stroll down the hall to talk to a co-worker instead of sending an email or calling. (this is not a prob since I walk a lot at work)

23. Brush your teeth after every meal and snack
This will be a signal to your mouth — and your mind — that it's time to stop eating. Brushing will also give your mouth a nice fresh taste that you'll be disinclined to ruin with a random chip. At work, keep a toothbrush with a cover and toothpaste in your desk drawer. (this works wonders at night haha)

24. Clean your closet
First, it's great exercise. Second, it's an important step in changing your attitude. Get rid of all the clothes that make you look or feel bad. Throw out anything that's too big — don't give yourself the option of ever fitting into those clothes again. Move the smaller clothes up to the front to help motivate you. Soon, you'll be fitting into those too-tight jeans you couldn't bear to part with. (might as well give them up for charity)

25. Take your measurements
You might not like your stats now, but you'll be glad you wrote them down when you see how many inches you've lost. It's also another way to measure your success, instead of just looking at the scale. Sometimes even when the numbers on the scale aren't going down, the measurements on your body are. (will do! just weigh myself every day for the time being)

Longgg before raya
Ehemm.. heheh

These might seem overwhelming for most of us but do experiment and see what works for you. Remember that little things go a long way!

Got Words?

Kids love it when an English lesson is more than just a lesson. They wanna learn English in a fun way and at the same time have fun while learning English (err, notice the difference?). These Form 3 students were so eager when I brought some Scrabble sets into the class after their trial exam (you know how it is having to wait for exam results and all):

Cracking his head, thinking of ways to create a word apparently.....
Ain't the completed board look beautiful?

Well, there are many ways to utilise Scrabble in your lesson. You can either:
  1. let them play the game to occupy the time (or to unwind, maybe), or
  2. ask them to create words based on certain topics, or
  3. ask them to list down the words they have created and construct sentences/a story based on it.
This way, the lesson will be more meaningful and students will be able to challenge themselves to give their best and compete with their peers in a positive way :-)

And of course, creativity is also developed along the way....

Love is..... on a scrabble board?

They tried to fit in everybody's name here, but to no avail hehe

An Apple A Day Keeps The Kilos Away

Raya mode is still on and I'm sure there are lotsa open house invitations here and there. I'm sure it's pretty hard to say no to those invitations especially when it comes from your close friends and families but the question is, how to maintain your weight or lose some while enjoying the food spread of all sorts? The answer is simple: eat a green apple daily.

Bila cakap tentang epal hijau, most people would say "eee, masamlah" or "tak sedap compared to epal merah" and whatnot, well, no one said it's gonna be easy, right? Tapi bagi aku, aku suka je sebab aku ni memang peminat tegar mende-mende masam (and it has nothing to do with cravings whatsoever okay!)

Anyways, I'd like to share some valuable info about the benefits of eating green apples I found on Utusan:

So, if you're still looking for an alternative to shed some kilos apart from the usual diet-and-exercise combination, try green apples. I wouldn't recommend it if it doesn't work (maklumlah tengah berusaha keras menurunkan berat ni hehe).

Cheers.

Aidilfitri Celebration Part #3

Here comes Part #3 now!

Open houses are synonymous with Raya and though the houses are always 'open' for guests during Syawal, some prefer to invite their families and friends to their homes at certain day or time. Memang tak dinafikan, open house memang menjimatkan masa, duit dan tenaga sebab buat sekaligus, but for some reasons, I think it's gonna be a while till I host another 'official' open house coz based on my personal experience last year, TERSANGATLAH PENAT DAN TAK TERLAYAN SEMUA ORANG! (well, unless you're using catering services lah)

Tahun lepas punya open house - gambar ni je yang sempat ambik huhu

To be frank, though I'm not a really good cook, I prefer to give my personal touch to the dishes served to my guests. Biar simple camne sekali pun, asalkan masakkan untuk diorang coz bukan selalu kita nak jamu tetamu kita kan. Tapi kalau tak sedap or tak kena selera, ampunkan saya ye.

I'm their homeroom teacher and they've been bugging me about coming over to my place for raya since puasa and I was like "Okay, okay, datanglah" sebab beriya sangat diorang nak datang walaupun rumah aku agak jauh dari sekolah, siap sanggup naik bas and all.

And since I'm my own maid, pagi-pagi lagi dah start cooking, cleaning and prepare apa-apa yang patut. The menu on that day was bihun sup, soto, nasi impit and kuah kacang, some fruits, jelly and loads and loads of tidbits (coz that's the only thing they'll eat the most anyway hehe).

Anyways, the kids ate like there's no tomorrow but I don't mind coz memang tu pun tujuannya kan. Apapun, I feel happy coz they enjoyed their visit to my place and that I enjoyed their company as well. Mau tak, tetiba riuh rendah rumah dibuatnya! All my cats siap bertempiaran lari... terkejut bising sangat hahahah

My students and I

Makan jangan tak makan!

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank those who came on that day and do remember that I'll always pray for your success in the upcoming SPM okay!

Gaya mesti ada.

Group photo!

Pada yang lelain tu, my house is always open to you all so jangan segan-segan nak mai beraya rumah ye! *valid for Syawal only, sila inform beforehand ye heheheh*

And that marks the end of the entry on this year's Raya. See you next year, Aidilfitri! :-)

Aidilfitri Celebration Part #2

As promised, here is the second part of the entry on this year's Aidilfitri celebration.

One of the great things about raya is you get to travel all around and visit those people you only see once in a while, be it family, relatives or friends. Alhamdulillah, with god's will, I'm so glad that this year I got to see my aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends yang lamaaaaa sangat tak jumpa.

Sunset in Teluk Intan
Cuz, uncle and aunt
Met a cat who eats kuih raya! Pineapple tarts to be precise
My kakak! Love the pudding btw
Visited my pet sister in A. Star for the first time after her amputation
Sempat juga singgah ke Sg. Dua pekena mee udang yum yum!

With my best buddies who now reside in Penang
My high school buddies
My first time meeting my friend's children tup tup dah besar dah - time flies!
With my (paternal) granny at my cuz's wedding in Sg. Siput -
tapi dengan the newlyweds lupa plak nak amek! Aiyaks

With my (youngest) aunt yang seriously lama tak jumpa

I also went to visit my bro who was 'stranded' at his place in K. Selangor sebab dia kena on-call throughout the raya holidays. Kesian!! One good thing about it is I got to see his cat, Sena, whom he took from our home not so long ago. Meoww!~

Sena is one playful kitty and constantly asks for attention.
"Hai! Nama saya Sena. Saya ni pemalu orangnya. Ahakss."

Anyways I've just realised that I didn't take any pictures with my own family this year - what a bummer -.-"

Stay tuned for Part #3 pulak ye! (berapa banyak part daaa)

Aidilfitri Celebration Part #1

Like every other year, this Raya was a joyous one. This year we'd decided to go back to hubby's hometown in Malacca first sebab tahun lepas balik Perak dulu. Kitorang memang every year macam ni, almaklumlah masih berdua kan.. masih mampu nak 'lari' sana-sini waktu raya sebab waktu ni je betul-betul dapat spend time with both families.

If kat my own hometown, just my mom and I je yang buat (anak pompuan sorang la katakan). My maternal grandparents pun dah takde so her siblings pun jarang balik so tinggallah kami anak beranak je kat kampung.

Anyways, we went back to Malacca a day before raya dan waktu sampai tu semua tengah bersiap-siap nak masak ketupat, rendang dan lauk-pauk yang lain. Time ni jugaklah sibuk nak masukkan kuih dalam balang, kemas rumah and the like. One thing I like about balik Malacca is my MIL akan masak macam-macam lauk untuk dimakan dengan ketupat nasi. Ada rendang ayam, sayur lodeh/jawa, kari ayam dan kuah kacang so pilih je mana yang berkenan heheh.. biasanya by the second day of raya semua lauk-pauk dah habis walaupun dimasak dalam kuantiti yang banyak. Aku masih tak pass lagi nak anyam ketupat (nasi) sebab kebiasaannya my mom masak ketupat daun palas/pulut je. Alaa.. yang tiga segi tu. Tu pandai la... pandai makan heheheheheheheh

Anyways, malam tu kitorang sekeluarga (budak-budak la mostly) main bunga api dan mercun depan rumah. I mean, what's Raya without sparklers, firecrackers and fireworks kann?

On 1st Syawal itself, pagi-pagi dah mintak maaf kat hubby kat dalam bilik sebab malu nanti tak tercakap waktu depan ahli keluarga lain hehe boleh? Boleh la kannn.. Anyways, acara makan-makan (read: mentekedarah), bersalaman dan bergambar tak hingat dunia dimulakan sejurus selepas balik dari sembahyang Raya. Let the pics tell the story:

Santapan hari raya

Pelok ciom satt

Kopek jangan tak kopek, bro!

Hubby and I

Makan time!

Girls only! Well, except for abah lahhh

Abah, ibu and the boys

With the parents

The grandparents and the cucu(s)

The crazy siblings

Later that afternoon, adik-beradik my FIL gathered at hubby's late grandma's house for open house + kenduri doa selamat dan bacaan Yasin.

Abah and his siblings

Seranggggg!

Salam jangan tak salam!

"Sapa nak duit raya beratur cepatttt!" - dengan mak, bapak orang siap beratur sabar je lahh
With hubby's little family :-)

It was really nice to be surrounded by your loved ones. Raya was awesome. I love Raya.

Stay tuned for Part #2 okay!!
